Your first hour with a racing wheel: what to expect

Switching from a controller to a racing wheel transforms the way you interact with a racing game. But don't be surprised if your first few sessions are difficult and messy.

You may have years of muscle memory built around a controller, and even years of real-world driving experience. Neither necessarily prepares you for the combination of the two.

A wheel and pedals immediately make driving feel more familiar. You steer with both hands, operate the pedals with your feet, and feel the car responding through the wheel. That can instinctively bring real-world driving habits into play.

This can make you slower at first. With a gamepad, you may have developed techniques that work extremely well within the game without thinking about how closely they resemble real driving. Once you have a wheel in your hands, you may start reacting as you would in a real car instead, and you'll be learning how to connect familiar physical movements with the particular way the simulation behaves.
